Trayvon Martin was 17-years-old when he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. On the evening of February 26, 20012, Martin had travelled with his father to visit his father’s fiancee. Martin went out to purchase some items from a convenience store. On his way home, Zimmerman, a member of the community watch, spotted him and called Sanford police. Although he was told not to, Zimmerman followed Martin, resulting in an altercation between the two in which Martin was shot in the chest. The New Yorker’s first issue was published on February 21, 1925. The Umatilla are a tribe of Native Americans who signed a treaty with the US government back in 1855 in which they gave up their land and agreed to live on the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon. In exchange, the Umatilla were ensured the right to continue hunting traditional foods including salmon, deer, elk and buffalo. Buffalo in particular was mentioned over 20 times in the treaty. A century later, the Umatilla had to fight to have their right to hunt buffalo recognized, both by Montana and by government agencies. On February 13, 2011, a handful of Umatilla were able to travel to Montana to hunt buffalo for the first time in over 100 years. In this video, members of that first hunting party discuss what it meant to them to be able to partake in the cultural practice.
